Joseph Bologne
Chevalier de Saint-Georges

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745–1799), was one of the most remarkable figures of the 18th century. Born in Guadeloupe to a wealthy French planter and an enslaved African woman, Bologne rose to prominence in Paris as a virtuoso violinist, conductor, composer, and fencer. He was celebrated for his symphonies, concertos, and chamber works, and became the music director of one of Paris’s leading orchestras. Despite the racial prejudice of his time, Bologne earned recognition as the first known classical composer of African descent to achieve international fame. His music reflects elegance, brilliance, and innovation, making him a vital voice in the Classical era alongside Mozart and Haydn.
Avid Reeder Music is honored to bring the works of Joseph Bologne to today’s ensembles. We offer his symphonies in accessible formats, making his artistry available to both performers and audiences who may be discovering his legacy for the first time.
